The Pittsburgh region has produced some of world’s most legendary fighters, boxers, wrestlers, and martial artists. Pennsylvania is considered the birthplace of modern “sport” mixed martial arts in the United States (1979). Pittsburgh MMA is dedicated to keeping the storied traditions alive and proving a historical reference for all types of combat and mixed martial arts in the area.
Pittsburgh has long been associated with championship athletes, from boxing legends Billy Conn and Fritzie Zivic to wrestling icons Bruno Sammartino and Kurt Angle. Yet one of the city’s lesser-known contributions to combat sports is its role in the early development of American mixed martial arts.
In 1979, Bill Viola Sr. and Frank Caliguri began developing a competition designed to bring fighters from different disciplines into the same arena. Their company, CV Productions, organized the Tough Guy contests, which culminated in a groundbreaking series of competitions at the New Kensington Holiday Inn in March 1980.
The events allowed participants to combine striking, wrestling, and grappling techniques under a defined set of rules. They attracted competitors from varied backgrounds and helped demonstrate the commercial potential of mixed-style fighting.
The Smithsonian-affiliated Heinz History Center recognizes these competitions as an important early chapter in American MMA history, preserving original promotional posters, protective equipment, uniforms, and other artifacts.

The Viola family’s connection to martial arts began before the Tough Guy competitions. In 1969, Bill Viola Sr. established Allegheny Shotokan Karate, building a foundation in traditional martial arts instruction that would later extend into combat sports promotion.
Through CV Productions, Viola Sr. and Caliguri organized competitions across Pennsylvania under names including Battle of the Tough Guys, Battle of the Brawlers, and Super Fighters.
Their promotional activities were eventually disrupted by Pennsylvania’s 1983 Tough Guy Law, which prohibited the mixed-style fighting format they had developed.
Despite the end of the original competitions, the family’s involvement in martial arts continued.
Bill Viola Jr. followed his father’s path as a martial artist, instructor, promoter, and historian. He became a national karate champion and continued the family dojo tradition while developing his own contributions to combat sports.
As president of Kumite Classic Entertainment and a leader in international kickboxing, Viola Jr. has worked across traditional karate, competitive martial arts, and modern combat sports.
One of Bill Viola Jr.’s most significant contributions has been his work documenting the origins of organized American MMA.
He co-authored the bestselling Godfathers of MMA: The Birth of an American Sport with Dr. Fred Adams. The book, subsequently published as Tough Guys, recounts the pioneering competitions and the legal battles that shaped their history.
The story gained national attention through the 2017 documentary Tough Guys, which premiered at AFI DOCS and aired on SHOWTIME. Viola Jr. served as an associate producer.
Beyond the documentary, he has continued promoting historical education through archival research, publishing, and preservation efforts associated with CV Productions.
He is also the author and creator of the CommonSensei® book series, extending the Viola family’s educational philosophy into character development, leadership, and life skills.
In 2011, the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum at the Heinz History Center unveiled an exhibit recognizing the region’s pioneering role in American MMA.
The exhibit included memorabilia from the original Tough Guy competitions, including protective equipment, promotional materials, and historic photographs.
This recognition helped establish the Viola-Caliguri story within the region’s documented sporting heritage.
The museum’s acknowledgment is especially significant because it provides independent institutional recognition of the events, beyond the promotional accounts of the original organizers.
Founded in 1979 and reportedly incorporated on January 10, 1980, CV Productions occupies a distinctive position in American combat sports history.
The company’s original Tough Guy events predated the UFC by more than a decade. In 2010, the promotional banner returned with Caged Kumite, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the early competitions.
Today, the company’s historical preservation activities provide a connection between those original events and the modern MMA era.
Its longevity also presents an intriguing subject for further research: whether CV Productions may be among the oldest surviving MMA production companies in the world.
Establishing a definitive claim of continuous business operations would require additional corporate and historical documentation.
The Viola family’s influence extends beyond the origins of MMA.
From Bill Viola Sr.’s traditional karate school and pioneering combat sports promotions to Bill Viola Jr.’s work as an instructor, author, promoter, and historian, the family has maintained a connection to martial arts across generations.
